CORT Spotlight on Military Veterans – Tonya Carter

Tonya in WP Formal Dress UniformTonya Carter, Senior Group HR manager at CORT, is a 1989 graduate of the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point. She graduated as a Second Lieutenant, and chose the Corps of Engineers branch. As an 11-year veteran, Tonya served our country domestically and internationally. Six of those years were active duty and two were in reserve. The remaining three years were in the National Guard. In 2003, Tonya was being promoted to Major when she suffered a permanent injury, preventing her from a tour of duty in Iraq.

Some interesting facts regarding Tonya’s military service include holding several obstacle course records at West Point, including one she held for 25 years. Tonya also met her husband, Tyno Carter, during her time at the USMA, and they got married the day after graduation! Although Tonya had a beautiful wedding at the historical Cadet Chapel on campus, she admits it was a very stressful time planning a wedding, and would not recommend getting married the day after you graduate college! It must not have been too stressful, because she and Tyno are still married today, 25 years later, and even renewed their wedding vows at the Cadet Chapel on their 10th wedding anniversary. Keeping it all in the family, Tonya and Tyno’s daughter Nicole is currently attending USMA and will graduate in 2017!

In her role in the Human Resources department at CORT, Tonya actively recruits military veterans for open positions within CORT through several military resources, including Bradley Morris, Lucas and Associates, Corporate Gray, Joint Service Academy database, Hire a Hero, Service Academy Career Conference, West Point Society, military job boards, and local posts like Ft. Belvoir, Fort Meyer, and Quantico.

Thank you for your service, Tonya!
