CORT and Move For Hunger: Fighting Hunger Through Every Move

What Happens to the Food You Leave Behind?

When you move, a lot goes out the door — furniture, boxes, maybe a sense of routine.

And often, food gets left behind. An extra box of pasta. A couple of cans in the pantry. A freezer full of food that won’t make the trip. It adds up — and too often, it goes to waste.

But to someone else — a neighbor, a family in your city — that food means a meal.

That’s the idea behind Move For Hunger. And it’s why we’ve partnered with them at CORT for the past six years.

Because while our job is helping people and businesses during transitions — whether moving to a new home, setting up a temporary office, or furnishing a celebration — we’ve learned that those moments are full of potential to do more.

You’re Already in the Right Place

CORT moves with people every day. We deliver furniture to new apartments, help businesses open temporary spaces, furnish homes during in-between seasons — and support events that come together for just a day or two.  And in all of those spaces — homes, offices, events — there’s often food left behind.

Through our long-term partnership with Move For Hunger, we help make sure that food doesn’t go to waste. It goes where it’s needed.

That looks like:

  • Our teams helping Move For Hunger collect and transport food from apartment communities to local food banks
  • Every CORT Furniture Outlet now having a permanent Food Donation Station
  • More than 500,000 meals delivered to families since we started

None of this is about “doing good” for the sake of it. It’s about noticing what’s already in front of us — and responding in a way that’s practical, local, and real.

Why This Still Matters

Food insecurity doesn’t always look like hunger. Sometimes it looks like parents skipping meals so kids don’t have to. It looks like choosing rent over groceries. It looks like canned soup, week after week, because fresh isn’t affordable.

This is happening in every community where we work. And that’s exactly why we believe this partnership is part of our job — not separate from it.

If you’ve ever worked with us, visited an Outlet, or been part of a move or event we’ve supported — you’re part of it, too.

What Partnership Looks Like in Real Life

This year at AIM 2025, our team is joining Move For Hunger and industry partners for a hands-on packing event — assembling meal kits for local families facing food insecurity. It wasn’t flashy. It’s practical, organized, and real. Dozens of people working side by side, taking time during a busy conference to do something that mattered.

It was also a reminder: partnership isn’t about logos or press releases. It’s about showing up — consistently, and with purpose. That’s what this event represents for us. And it’s what the CORT and Move For Hunger partnership continues to mean every day we show up in communities around the country.

Want to Help?

You don’t need to be part of a big program. You don’t need a truck. You just need to know this:

If you’re moving, hosting an event, or closing down a temporary space — and you have food you don’t need — we can help get it to someone who does.

That’s all. You can learn more about how to donate or get involved at moveforhunger.org.

Let’s stop throwing food away. Let’s start thinking about where it could go instead.
