Explore the Arboretum
A great year-round option for all ages, the 300-acre Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens offers a wonderful way to experience nature. Older kids can explore trails that traverse bottomland paths to rocky bluffs while keeping an eye out for deer, birds, snakes, and various other wildlife. As a bonus, check out the many educational offerings when you visit. Admission is very reasonable, and free admission is typically offered one day a week.
Fun on the Farm
The Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead closes for the winter months, but it’s worth the wait to enjoy this back-to-nature experience the rest of the year. Learn about farming life with chickens, turkeys, cow milking, a duck pond, and even dairy goats. You can see everything in one day thanks to the wagon rides that take you around the farmstead to view the master gardens, koi pond, and butterfly gardens.
In all, more than 250 animals and birds live at the farm, so it’s perfect for both education and entertainment. Complete your day with a trip to the ice cream parlor and the general store for souvenirs. Admission is always inexpensive and even free during certain times of day.
Enjoy the Arts
Visiting an art museum can seem intimidating when you have kids, but the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is the ideal place for a family outing. Check out the family programs for different age groups, or opt for a leisurely visit filled with browsing. It’s an easy and accessible way to introduce your children to art or to encourage their already growing love of art. Admission and parking are free.
Go to the Moon
Since 1997, Moon Marble Company has made colorful marbles in a variety of sizes, and the colorful glass goodies are always eye-catching and fascinating. Catch a demonstration of how marbles are made, and watch the work of other glassworkers, or shop the selection of other toys and games. It’s an outing that easily adds a little pizzazz to a rainy day. Admission is free.
