With economists pointing to a buyer’s market in 2012, sellers are scrambling to make their homes more appealing and gain the edge. But you don’t necessarily need to do major renovations to make your home more attractive. In a buyer’s market, home staging can make all the difference in the sale of your home, and you can do home staging yourself by following a few simple guidelines. 1. Clean and depersonalize the space. When preparing your home, be sure to clean more rigorously than you ever cleaned before, including the exterior. Be sure that your grass is cut, trees and bushes are maintained and the overall appearance of your home’s exterior is appealing. On the inside, clean every surface and make sure that the house is impeccable. One way to approach this is to walk through your home and imagine that you are a potential home buyer. This may allow you to see things you did not see before. Remove all of your personal belongings and anything that represents your personal style. The home buyer needs to be able to imagine themselves living in your home. If your personal touch is everywhere, this may be more difficult. Also remove anything …

After the stresses of a long day, wouldn’t it be nice to return home to your own little island oasis? Whether you live in Rockport, Maine or Boise, Idaho, all is possible with the right elements of coastal decor! To begin, select a color scheme for your rooms. Your palette is very important and will serve as the baseline for your coastal decor motif. Choose creamy, light-colored natural hues and pair with varying shades of blue or blue-green. It is important that you work with the same hue of blue, and simply find lighter and darker shade versions to add to the color scheme. Otherwise, the overall look will feel imbalanced and unfocused. Beachy blues and sandy beiges work very well together. Find accents that will fit your theme. Coastal decor is all about incorporating physical elements of the beach into your home. Rope nets, opaque and blue-green glass bottles, model ships, and coral centerpieces can easily tie your look together. If you have easy access to the beach, why not make a day of finding unique treasures for your home? Collect seashells, sand dollars, starfish and interesting pieces of driftwood that can be used as bookends. An ocean or linen scented candle can …

Sometimes elements of drama are just what you need to spice up your home furniture rental and totally revamp the interior design style of your home. Are you looking to add some flair to your living room or boudoir? It is really quite simple (and can be inexpensive) to add some chic grandeur to your home. Achieve the “high glam” look by following a few (or all) of these pointers: Color and Shine Chose a palette that pairs two shades of natural, “stone” tones (ex: ebony, charcoal, egg white, granite, etc) with a deep color or bold print. The key is to pick one, solid color scheme and stick with it! Be careful with wallpaper. Chose a print that features only one bold color and make sure that you have solid colored accents (such as the sofa or throw pillows) that complement the color you chose. If you decided on a tribal theme, or multi-colored print, make sure all other colors in the room are neutral (including your home furniture rental) and pair with metallic accents. Metallics, mirrors, and high-gloss finishes add instant glam to a room. Incorporate one metal into your color scheme to add a bit of shine to your design …

Earlier this week we launched a Facebook Quiz Sweepstakes that asks “What is your interior decor style?” with 8 questions that lead to a style description suited most for you, and a visual inspiration pinboard from our home decor Pinterest page. It’s fun stuff! You can even win a $350 gift gard to Jet Blue airlines by participating in our home furniture rental quiz! One of our “interior decor theme” quiz results is the classic, and contemporary ”Modern Minimalist” look. If this style appeals to you, you we have some tips that can help you achieve a fresh look for your home interior. As a design minimalist, you want guests to feel calm, balanced, and oriented to their surroundings. To achieve the “Modern Minimalist” look with your home furniture rental, start by integrating strong lines and stone colors (grey, black, cream, white), and contrast with furnishings that offer a pop of color or splash of print. Accent with delicate florals (orchids and bamboo create nice touches), crisp lighting, and a display of contemporary art that takes the stage as a centerpiece for the room. The key to creating a “Modern Minimalist” setting is to always strive for a “less is more” …

Are you running out of time for your home staging project? There is so much to do and so little time! And most of all, everything has to be perfect. You may have been told before that there is a fine line between perfectionism and procrastination. It is easy to get overwhelmed by a large project with limited time. If you are paralyzed with thought, take a breath and read on. Hope comes in the form of a little organization. Make a list of every home staging detail that needs to get done before the first showing of the house. Take time to write absolutely everything down. Then, number tasks by varying levels of importance. Label high priority things as 1, and luxuries and details as 3. Create a sliding scale of priority and then approximate how long it will take to do each task. Finally, compare it to the number of hours or days that you have, and set your crunch time schedule! Eliminate tasks that are low priority as you lose time. Don’t do away with low priority tasks altogether. Keep hustling through your to-do list so that you can get to the lower priority stuff when …

Last week on the furniture blog we discussed storage ideas for small apartment or dorm living in college. This week, we take on areas of your living space that can benefit from organization. Once you have these three areas in check, you can save time and not have to worry about last minute changes of plans, or all night study marathons! 1. The Closet: Arranging clothes and shoes by color is a classic technique, but it is not always practical and even more difficult to maintain. Instead, keep your lifestyle and habits in mind to find an arrangement that works best for you. Organizing clothes by season, by outfit choices that would look good together, or for dedicated occasions (gym, class, dinner date, etc) are all ideas to consider. Refer to our last furniture blog post for storage tips for your closet that can also help you organize. 2. The Desk: Usually, this is where you will be when you are on what we like to call “academic lockdown” – the time when a deadline is near and all coffee shops in the area with wi-fi are closed. The key is to make your desk area clutter free and well lit. Accordion files …

CORT Furniture can cover all student furniture rental needs, but when it comes to finding a place to fit all of your stuff into your new living arrangement, you may have discovered your first challenge! CORT Facebook friend, Krista Weaver, says that “storage, storage, storage!” is the key to organization, and we definitely agree. Especially when you are living in close quarters with roommates. Do not fret though, making room for storage in your apartment or dorm is really more simple than you think! And it does not have to be expensive either. Here are a few storage tips we like. These tips also can be useful for home staging projects that aim to de-clutter showroom spaces. Make the most of wall space. When you are faced with limited space, the wall becomes your storage friend! Bookshelves and other shelving units make great use of space and can keep everything from records, office supplies, and all of your school books in order. For shelving ideas, we really like this post from the apartment living blog at ApartmentSearch.com. It explains several ways you can make bookshelves into a functional and attractive place for small objects and collections in small living spaces. Utilize all …
